Playing Race

Racial issues are “complicated, convoluted, and complex,” and are often “not talked about,” according Ohio University students that were part of a recent class project. “Performing Race” was a perfect example of effective interdisciplinary exchange and the type of transformative learning experiences OHIO’s supportive professors provide for students. According to Assistant Professor of Political Science Debra Thompson, Ph.D. in the College of Arts and Sciences and Assistant Professor of Performance Rebecca VerNooy, M.A., in the College of Fine Arts, the purpose of the project was to demonstrate that “knowledge doesn’t exist in a silo” and introduce to students “an idea that is not something they would normally think about.” When this happens, they said, “we’ve done our job.” Described by the students and the professors  in a video and Compass article produced by UCM staff members Andie Walla and George Mauzy, respectfully, that job, to help ensure students become “well-rounded, multi-faceted, critical thinkers,” is something supportive professors at Ohio University are making happen every day.
